New or used truck? The right answer depends on use, budget and the cost of downtime. How to decide in Côte d'Ivoire.
It is the first question every business asks when equipping itself: should you buy a new or a used truck? In Côte d'Ivoire, used vehicles hold a large place in the market, and for good reasons. But new vehicles also have strong arguments. The answer does not lie in the purchase price, but in what the vehicle will cost you and earn you over its whole working life.
The real cost of a truck
The purchase price is only part of the spending. Add fuel, tyres, routine servicing, spare parts, insurance and, above all, the cost of downtime. A truck stuck in a garage carries nothing, and every lost day weighs on your turnover, and even on your relationship with your customers.
Reasoning in total cost, per tonne carried or per hour worked, is the only way to compare a new and a used vehicle honestly.
When new is the answer
New makes sense first for vehicles that work every day, especially when a breakdown stops a whole crew or jeopardises a delivery. Reliability, the manufacturer's warranty and often better-controlled fuel consumption then quickly make up for the price gap.
Some clients, notably in energy, mining or major works, also set requirements on the age and condition of their subcontractors' vehicles. New or recent equipment can be the condition for winning a contract.
Finally, new lets you choose exactly the configuration you need: wheelbase, power, type of body or cab.
When used is the right calculation
Used is often the best option for starting a business, for topping up a fleet for a one-off need or for a vehicle that will not be driven much. Less capital is tied up, and part of the depreciation has already been absorbed by the first owner.
Everything then depends on the quality of the vehicle chosen. A well-maintained used vehicle, inspected before purchase and with a known history, can give many years of service. A used vehicle bought blind can, on the contrary, turn out far more expensive than a new one.
Semi-trailers and machinery
Not all machines age in the same way. A semi-trailer, with no engine or gearbox, generally stands the years better than a tractor unit: the condition of the chassis, axles and brakes is then decisive. For construction machinery, operating hours and the condition of the hydraulic circuit count for more than age.
Spare parts, a decisive criterion
New or used, a vehicle is only worth something if you can maintain it. Before buying, make sure common parts are available locally and that mechanics know the model. Brands well established in Côte d'Ivoire offer a real advantage here.
And financing?
