Sizing a generator

A generator is sized to the power drawn, not the power installed. The point not to miss is the starting peak of electric motors, often three to six times their running consumption: a generator sized on nominal consumption alone trips at the first start of a pump or compressor.

On a site connected to the grid, the generator is a backup and is sized only for the circuits you want to keep running. On an isolated site, it powers everything and runs continuously. Two different calculations, and therefore two different machines.

Choosing a compressor

A compressor is chosen by the air flow required by the tools it supplies, and above all by the number of tools used at the same time. Adding up the individual flows is the rule: two breakers on a compressor meant for one both work badly.

Pressure, on the other hand, is usually standard; it is flow that runs short.
