Tractor units

A tractor unit pulls a semi-trailer and carries no load itself. It is the long-haul machine: on the West African corridors, between Abidjan, Ouagadougou and Bamako, it moves the bulk of the freight, and it is where the profitability of a trip is decided.

4x2 or 6x4, in other words 6 or 10 wheels

A 4x2, with two axles and six wheels, is enough on paved roads and uses less fuel: it is the choice for intercity routes on well-kept tarmac.

A 6x4 has three axles, two of them driven, making ten wheels. It gives the traction you need as soon as you leave the tarmac, load at a quarry, cross a track in the rainy season or climb a hill fully loaded. On the regional corridors and for heavy haulage, it is the standard configuration.

Power follows gross weight

The heavier the combination and the steeper the terrain, the more horsepower you need. On Ivorian routes, common configurations range from 340 to 430 horsepower; below that, a loaded combination struggles on climbs and wears faster.
